Spoiler Alert, this is about Never Let Me Go, SPOILER THE FUCK ALERT. shall i say it again?
Okay, the movie is Never Let Me Go(bullshit title and i’ll tell you why). The story follows three children who grow up in a boarding school, the main character, Kathy H., falls in love with the oddball of the school, Tommy. Her best friend who didn’t like him at all before decides to steal him away before she even gets a chance to be with him. A quarter of the movie in we learn that the kids in this school are being brought up, kept healthy, to be harvested for organs. They are clones. Okay, so, cool. While The Island has addressed this issue before, it blew. This movie on the other hand has superb acting, particularly good storytelling, and the score is beautiful. It’s commentary on societal morality and the ethics of cloning are effective and moving.
So here is my problem: They know their fate, they understand and resent the cruelty of the purpose for their existence as it has been given to them. They have cars. They drive on holidays away from their Unguarded and unfenced communes. Tommy and Kathy H. fall in love together. They hear a rumor that if you fall in love and can prove it you can live a few extra years as a couple before you are harvested. They find out who the person is that they should apply for these extra years with, they find out that it was just a rumor and there is no such deferral…
They go back to the hospital and Tommy has the rest of his organs removed while kathy watches. He smiles as he passes looking at the one he loves.
NEVER LET ME GO? YEAH? BULLSHIT. They never even thought of running. Not even once. They went back to the hospital and she gave him to them willingly. They barely got more than a few days with each other having admited their love and they don’t even think to take the car they are in AND FUCKING GET THE FUCK OUT OF THIS BITCH. I can’t get my head around that and the movie never explains or gives any notion to this issue.
So, all in all, fantastic movie, but with a giant hole in the premise that i can not ignore.
